Freeport Creek, New York Boat Collision

Two vessels collided in Freeport Creek, New York in the evening of August 1, 2020. The collision, which happened at about 6:45 p.m., injured seven people. A 25-year-old man was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according to a news release issued by the Nassau County Police Department. According to the release, two passengers sustained serious trauma during the incident. The deceased, Jorge Soto, was operated the vessel that was struck. According to witnesses, the vessel was broadsided by the other boat.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the boat which caused the accident was traveling far in excess of the posted speed limit on the water. The location of the incident is a popular spot for boats to tie together and socialize, requiring other vessels to adhere to a slow speed limit for everyone’s safety.
