Explosion at Florida Chemical Plant

by | Sep 9, 2020 | Industrial Accident, Personal Injury

There was an explosion at the FAR Chemical Inc. plant located in Brevard County, Florida shortly after 11:00 am on September 8, 2020.  Both Palm Bay, Florida police and fire personnel responded following the explosion.  Early indications are that the explosion originated from an industrial storage area containing 30-40 50-gallon barrels of an isopropyl alcohol-based solution.  It is unknown at this time if any workers at the facility were injured, or how the chemical smoke that resulted from the fire will impact those who inhaled it.

FAR Chemical manufactures both custom chemicals as well as hazardous materials packaging at the plant.  CPS Performance Materials acquired the company in 2018.  The Palm Bay facility has been open for over 35 years.  FAR Chemical has previously been cited by OSHA following the death of a worker in 2008.  The worker was killing following the explosion of glass piping near where he was working. Following its investigation, OSHA fined the company $14,600 for serious violations.

Large chemical and industrial manufacturing plants can pose increased risks both to workers at the facilities and to the general public.  When dangerous chemicals are involved, extra precautions must be taken.  Although at this time it is not known what caused the alcohol-based solution at the plant to explode, safe plant operators must always ensure chemicals are stored properly.  Not only can an incident like this result in a catastrophic impact on the environment, but it can also result in a loss of life.
