Fire on Cargo Ship KM Yuliner – One Crewmember Dead, Four Missing

by | Sep 16, 2020 | Maritime Law, Wrongful Death

The cargo ship KM Yuliner burst into flames on Tuesday.  At the time, the vessel was off the coast of Sulawesi, one of the islands that comprises Indonesia.  The vessel was carrying cement, and was en route from Pangkep Port in South Sulawesi to Wakotobi.  Nearby fishermen were able to rescue two crew members from the water, one of whom subsequently died.  Four other crew members remain missing.

Safe maritime companies must perform regular maintenance and inspections in order to ensure the safety of their crew members.  When ship operators fail to conduct regular maintenance and inspection of the equipment on their vessels, dangerous fires and explosions can result.  This not only puts the lives of hardworking seaman at risk, but can also endanger members of the public.
