Explosion on Oil Tanker General Hazi Aslanov

There was an explosion on board the Russian tanker ship General Hazi Aslanov on October 24, 2020.  At the time, the vessel was in the Sea of Azov, en route from the port of Kavkaz to the port of Rostov-on-Don.  It is unclear what caused the explosion.  At the time of the explosion, the vessel had 13 crew members on board.  Three crew members are currently missing, and rescue operations are underway.  The tanker was built in 2005.  The vessel is owned and operated by Palmali Shipping & Agency.

Safe maritime companies must perform regular maintenance and inspections in order to ensure the safety of their crew members.  When ship operators fail to conduct regular maintenance and inspection of the equipment on their vessels, dangerous fires and explosions can result.  This not only puts the lives of hardworking seaman at risk, but can also endanger members of the public.  Safe transport companies must take into account all cargo that is on board to ensure that risks of a fire are not increased by the method of storage or transport.
