Houston Building Collapse – 3 Dead, 1 Injured

Tragically, three construction workers lost their lives on Monday afternoon after a building they were working in partially collapsed. The building was located at Houston’s Town and Country Boulevard in the area of City Centre near Interstate 10 and Beltway 8.  Reports are that the collapse began at a stairwell in between the 13th and 14th floor.  The stairwell collapsed down all the way to the bottom level.  The building being constructed is for Marathon Oil’s new headquarters.

At the time of the deadly incident 240 construction workers were present.  Thankfully, the partial collapse of the building did not result in more deaths or severe injuries.  It is believed the construction project is being managed by Harvey Builders, with subcontractor East Texas Precast and development manager Hines also involved.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who were impacted by this tragedy.

Despite being a vital part of the economy, construction projects often pose severe hazards both to construction workers and to the general public.  Construction companies must ensure that work is regularly and properly inspected. Each construction project poses its own unique risks and hazards based on the work being done.  Risks that may present themselves during a project must be carefully evaluated beforehand.  When this does not occur, it can result in catastrophic personal injury or death. According to OSHA, nearly 6.5 million people work at approximately 252,000 construction sites across the nation every day. The fatal injury rate for the construction industry is higher than the national average in this category for all industries.
