Lockhart Texas Balloon Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash of a hot air balloon near Lockhart, Texas, on July 30, 2016. The balloon is believed to have been operated by Heart of Texas Hot Air Balloon rides based in New Braunfels, Texas. All 16 people on board the balloon were killed, making it the worst hot air balloon disaster in U.S. history, and one of the deadliest air balloon disasters in the world. Debris at the scene of the crash is located underneath high-voltage electrical lines. The NTSB has said they will investigate the aircraft’s maintenance history as well as other factors, which may have caused the tragic accident.

Recently, in 2014, the NTSB urged the Federal Aviation Administration to impose greater oversight on commercial hot air balloon operators. The FAA rejected those recommendations.
