Air India Flight IX-1344 Crash

An Air India Express plane skidded off the runway and split in half after landing at Kozhikode Calicut International Airport in the Indian state of Kerala on August 7, 2020. The flight, originated in Dubai and had 190 people on board.

Preliminary reports are that 18 people died in the crash including both pilots. Over 30 passengers sustained serious injuries according to local officials. Bad weather was reported at the time, and the pilot had previously abandoned a prior landing attempt. It is not yet clear how the weather conditions impacted the second landing attempt. A formal investigation into the crash will be conducted by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

Air India Express operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India, and has 25 Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft.

This is not the first disaster for an Air India plane. In May 2010, an Air India plane overshot a runway in the southern Indian city of Mangalore. That plane also ran off the runway and crashed into a ravine, ultimately bursting into flames. 158 people were killed..
