Tug Boat Sir Gaetan Duval Sinks off Coast of Mauritius

A tug boat which was performing salvage operations off the coast of Mauritius sunk after a collision with a barge that the vessel was towing.  The tug, the Sir Gaetan Duval, has sunk in the Coral Lagoon and a rescue operation is underway to rescue additional crewmembers who on board.  Four crewmembers were rescued overnight, with two confirmed deaths at this time.

The oil barge has been identified as l’Ami Constant, owned by Mauritian maritime company Taylor Smith.  The Sir Gaetan Duval was participating in salvage and containment operations of the Wakashio, a Japanese iron-ore vessel which sunk off the coast of Mauritius.  The Sir Gaetan Duval is owned by the Mauritius Port Authority.
