Chemical Leak at Dow Plant in La Porte, Texas

by | Jul 21, 2021 | Industrial Accident, Personal Injury

There was a chemical leak at the Dow Chemical Plant in La Porte, Texas on July 21, 2021.  The La Porte Office of Emergency Management issued a shelter-in-place order, and even an evacuation order for some residents who live near the facility.  The evacuation order applies to those who reside within one-half mile of the plant, located at 13300 Bay Area Boulevard.  The chemical released has been identified as Hydroxyethyl Acrylate.  The chemical can cause irritation of the nose, throat and skin.

Reports indicate the compound leaked form an over-pressurized tank at the Rohm and Haas Chemicals Bayport Plant owned by Dow Chemical.  There is now concern that the leak may result in an explosion at the facility.

Plant operators must take precautions to ensure the safety of not only their workers, but those who live nearby in the community.  Maintenance and repair work must be done, and chemical tanks should be regularly and thoroughly inspected.  Hazards must be carefully evaluated to minimize the dangers to members of the public, and eliminate them before tragedies occur.
