Deadly Accident at Iowa Amusement Park

by | Jul 10, 2021 | Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly accident at the Adventureland park in Altoona, Iowa on July 3, 2021.  The accident occurred on the park’s ride the Raging River, when a boat carrying six people capsized.  One minor drowned in the accident, and another remains in critical condition at a local hospital.  Three other passengers also required medical treatment.

Unfortunately, this is not the first deadly accident to occur involving the ride.  In June 2016, a park’s worker got wedged between a boat and a concrete wall.  The worked eventually died to the head trauma he had sustained.  Adventureland was fined $4,500.00 by the Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Administration as a result of that incident.  State officials have ordered the park to cease operations of the ride pending an investigation.

Amusement and theme park operators must take precautions to ensure the safety of everyone who visits.  Maintenance and repair work must be done, and attractions should be regularly and thoroughly inspected.  Hazards must be carefully evaluated to minimize the dangers to members of the public, and eliminate them before tragedies like this one occur.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this incident.
