Fire Near Pemex Offshore Oil Platform in Gulf of Mexico

by | Jul 3, 2021 | Offshore accidents

A natural gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico caught fire on July 2, 2021.  According to reports, the fire broke out in an underwater pipeline at Pemex’s flagship Ku Maloob Zaap oil complex.  The group of platforms is owned by Pemex.  According to Pemex, the fire broke out 150 meters from the Ku-Maloob-Zaap’s Ku-C satellite platform in the Campeche Sound.  The field is one of Pemex’s most productive, accounting for nearly 40% of the company’s total oil output.  It is unclear what caused the fire to break out.

Safe pipeline and energy companies must perform regular maintenance and inspections in order to ensure the safety of their workers and the general public.  When this isn’t done, dangerous incidents can result.
