Fishing Boat Pneuma Sinks in Alaska – One Dead

| Jul 3, 2021 | Maritime Law, Wrongful Death

The fishing ship Pneuma sank on July 1, 2021.  At the time, there were three crew members on board the vessel.  The vessel was in the south end of Nushagak Bay, Alaska when it began taking on water.  Two crew members were able to be rescued by samaritan vessels, but a third lost his life in the incident.  The victim has been identified as the captain, Lance Eric Norby, of Arlington, Texas.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this tragic accident.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  The jack up boat SEACOR POWER capsized on April 13, 2021 south of Port Fourchon, Louisiana, with search and rescue operations continuing.  The jack up rig VELESTO NAGA 7 sunk on May 3, 2021 while offshore the Malaysian state of Sarawak.  A small recreational boat sank in Galveston, Texas on May 21, 2021.  A small recreational boat struck a concrete pier in Etowah County, Alabama on May 22, 2021.  A fire broke out in the engine room on board the products tanker SEALINK UTSHAB on May 23, 2021.  The offshore supply tug INSPECTA 7 sank on June 2, 2021.  There was a fire on board the container ship MSC Teresa on June 16, 2021.  The general cargo ship PIONEER STAR sank on June 20, 2021.  There was a fire on board the bulk carrier MORNINGSTAR on June 20, 2021.  There was a fire on board the container ship MSC Messina on June 24, 2021.  There was a fire on board the cargo ship KIRSTEN B on June 23, 2021.  A fire broke out on the general cargo ship URA on June 29, 2021.

Safe maritime companies must perform regular maintenance and inspections in order to ensure the safety of their crew members.  When ship operators fail to conduct regular maintenance and inspection of the equipment on their vessels, dangerous incidents can result.  This not only puts the lives of hardworking seamen at risk, but can also endanger members of the public.
