The offshore supply vessel TAMPEN was attacked and boarded by pirates on September 5, 2021. At the time, the vessel was in the Gulf of Guinea. Reports indicate three armed pirates boarded the vessel and exchanged gun shots with the crew. Two crew members were injured during the fighting and taken to a nearby hospital. One crew member is missing and was presumably kidnapped by the pirates.
Safe vessel operators must adequately prepare for the danger posed by piracy, or their crew members are at risk of serious injury or death. In 2020, a total of 130 maritime workers were kidnapped from vessels in the Gulf of Guinea in 22 separate attacks.

The fishing vessel IRIS-S was attacked and boarded by pirates on May 31, 2021. Five crew members were kidnapped from the fishing vessel ATLANTIC PRINCESS on May 19, 2021.The container ship CONTSHIP NEW was boarded by pirates on April 23, 2021.
