by | Oct 24, 2021 | Maritime Law, Offshore accidents, Personal Injury

There have been reports of an outbreak of COVID-19 on the chemical tanker ship BOW SUMMER.  One crew member is believed to have died from the disease on October 18, 2021.  Since October 15, 2021, the vessel has been berthed at the BASF Terminal in Antwerp, Belgium.  Thirteen of the vessel’s twenty-six crew members tested positive for the disease, and have been quarantined on shore.

The vessel is owned by Odfjell Asia II Pte Ltd and is operated by Odfjell Tankers AS.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  The ro-ro cargo ship IVAN capsized on September 29, 2021.  A recreational boat capsized in Maryland on September 29, 2021.  A sailboat capsized off the Oregon Coast on October 3, 2021.  A longshoreman was injured in a fall on the bulk carrier vessel ST GEORGE on October 13, 2021.  There was a deadly incident on the bulk carrier LUDOGORETS on October 13, 2021.  There was a fire on the general cargo ship DOREEN on October 17, 2021.  There was a fire on the general cargo ship M V MEHMET UNLU on October 20, 2021.

Safe maritime companies must take precautions in order to ensure the safety of their crew members.  When ship operators fail to consider the risks of a disease outbreak on their vessels, dangerous incidents can result.  This not only puts the lives of hardworking seamen at risk, but can also endanger members of the public.  During a global pandemic such as this one, safe companies MUST provide necessary medical treatment for their crew members, as well as implement adequate safety protocols and measures regarding COVID-19 on the vessel
