Fire at Wharton, Texas Plastics Plant

by | Jan 11, 2022 | Chemical Release, Industrial Accident

A massive fire broke out at a plastics plant in Wharton, Texas on January 9, 2022.  According to local authorities, there was a fire at the facility owned by Nan Ya Plastics Corp. USA. on Sunday night.  Multiple nearby residences were evacuated as a result of the fire.  The fire broke out with employees present at the facility.  It is unclear if any workers at the plant were injured during the fire.  At present it is unknown what chemicals were released into the air as a result of the fire, which last several hours.  Any time there is an incident at a plant which contains chemicals, there is a concern that chemicals may be released into the air resulting in respiratory injuries to workers or nearby residents.

There have been a number of incidents at industrial and chemical plants.  There was an explosion at the Interplastic Corporation plastics plant in Covington, Kentucky on January 10, 2022.  There was an explosion and fire at ExxonMobil’s Baytown, Texas plant on December 23, 2021.  There was an explosion at the Sanderson Farms Mill in Collins, Mississippi on December 13, 2021.

Plants can pose significant dangers both to workers and to the general public.  When dangerous work is involved, extra precautions must be taken, especially when catastrophic fires or explosions can occur.  Although at this time it is not known what caused this incident, safe plant operators must always ensure that equipment is regularly inspected and safely maintained.  Not only can an incident like this result in a catastrophic impact on the environment, but it can also result in a loss of life.
