There was a large explosion at the Marathon Petroleum Corporation refinery in Garyville, Louisiana on February 21, 2022. The plant is located along the Mississippi river in between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, and is one of the nation’s largest refineries. Reports indicate at least six contract workers were injured in the blast. The fire is believed to have begun in a hydrocracker, a piece of equipment that breaks heavy petroleum molecules down into lighter products. The cause of this incident remains under investigation.
