There was a fire on the mobile offshore drilling unit PRIDE WISCONSIN while it was located onshore in Sabine Pass, Texas on February 24, 2022.  The incident occurred on an out-of-service rig at Port City Partners Marine Yard.  Early reports indicate the rig was in the process of being scrapped when it caught fire.  At least nine workers were trapped at the top of the rig while it burned.  The U.S. Coast Guard was able to conduct an aerial rescue with a helicopter and rescue the workers before they were killed.  It is unclear at present what caused the fire.

Safe maritime companies must perform regular maintenance and inspections in order to ensure the safety of their workers and the general public.  When this isn’t done, dangerous incidents can result.  At this time it is unknown what caused the fire.
