Drilling Rig Accident in West Virginia

by | Mar 8, 2023 | Oilfield Accidents, Personal Injury

There was an accident at an oilfield site in West Virginia on February 27, 2023.  According to reports, a worker was crushed while moving a drilling rig.  A crew was moving the rig, when the worker became pinned between a fork lift and the rig’s stairs.  The victim sustained crush injuries to his pelvis, and required multiple surgeries to stabilize his pelvis.  The victim of this workplace injury has been identified as Michael Moore of Curwensville, Pennsylvania.  Additional details have not yet been released.

Oil and gas extraction is dangerous work.  Oil rigs can pose significant dangers both to workers and to the general public.  When dangerous work is involved, extra precautions must be taken, or workers can suffer the consequence.  According to the Center for Public Integrity, 1,566 oilfield workers were killed from 2008 through 2017.  Centers for Disease Control statistics indicate that the fatality rate for oil and gas workers is seven times higher than for workers in general in the United States.  The CDC indicates that transportation related incidents remain the highest cause of oilfield worker death.
