Recall of Peloton Fitness Equipment Following Injuries

by | Jun 1, 2023 | Personal Injury

Peloton, the popular fitness equipment company, has announced a massive recall of 2.2 million bikes due to a dangerous safety hazard involving the adjustable seat. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has urged owners of Peloton bikes with the model number PL-01 to “immediately stop using the bike.”

The safety hazard stems from the adjustable seat on the Peloton PL-01 model, which can break during use, causing major injuries to the rider. So far, 35 reports of seat posts breaking have been reported. The CPSC has also noted that injuries resulting from the defective seat include a fractured wrist, lacerations, and bruises due to falling from the bike. Peloton’s only response has been to offer repair kits to affected customers, which must be installed by the bike owners themselves. This solution raises concerns about the company’s commitment to safety and the adequacy of the remedy. The affected bikes were sold from January 2018 to May 2023, meaning that countless customers have been put at risk for years.

This is not the first time Peloton has been embroiled in controversy regarding safety hazards. The company was previously recalled 125,000 treadmills after a six-year-old child’s death and multiple reports of injuries related to the machines. Then, in January 2023, the CPSC fined Peloton $19 million for failing to promptly report treadmill hazards and for distributing recalled treadmills.
