New York City Crane Collapse

by | Jul 27, 2023 | Construction Accident, Personal Injury

There was a crane collapse in New York City, New York on July 26, 2023.  According to reports, the crane fell from an under construction building after catching fire.  At the time, the crane was lifting 16 tons of concrete.  The fire is believed to have started in the crane’s engine, before quickly spreading.  At least twelve people were injured in the incident.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving cranes.  There was a deadly electrocution during crane operations in Tucson, Arizona on July 3, 2023.  A crane toppled onto a home in Lower Makefield, Pennsylvania on July 17, 2023.  There was a crane accident in San Pedro, California on July 18, 2023.

Crane hazards are often underestimated by companies, supervisors, and workers, leading to gaps in safety policies and procedures. Industry-standard tools—like a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or risk assessment—systematically identify hazards and prescribe safer methods. Skipping this process can result in severe injury or death. A JSA evaluates each task step to pinpoint risks and define the safest way to do the work.  According to OSHA:

A job hazard analysis is a technique that focuses on job tasks as a way to identify hazards before they occur. It focuses on the relationship between the worker, the task, the tools, and the work environment. Ideally, after you identify uncontrolled hazards, you will take steps to eliminate or reduce them to an acceptable risk level.
