Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cantaloupes and Fruit Pouches Causes Deaths

In a critical health alert released on November 24, 2023, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes and fruit pouches, resulting in two deaths and affecting at least 99 individuals across 32 states. This outbreak, which has caused 45 hospitalizations, was reported following the deaths confirmed by Minnesota health authorities.

Consumers possessing these products are advised to discard them or return them to the store. Surfaces and items that have been in contact with the recalled fruits should be cleaned with hot soapy water or in a dishwasher to prevent bacterial spread.

The CDC is actively investigating this outbreak, collaborating with Canadian health officials due to reported cases in Canada. Salmonella infections, common yet costly, result in approximately 1.35 million infections and 26,500 hospitalizations yearly in the US, with an annual economic impact of about $4.1 billion.
