by | Dec 14, 2023 | Industrial Accident

There was a fire at Marathon Petroleum’s Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, Texas on December 13, 2023.  Reports indicate the fire broke out in a sour water tank in the facility’s Power 2 unit.  The fire is believed to have resulted in an explosion in a second tank.  The incident remains under investigation at this time.

The incident is yet another experienced at a Marathon Petroleum facility this year.  There was a fire at the Marathon Petroleum Refinery in Garyville, Louisiana on August 25, 2023.  In this incident, a highly flammable partially refined petroleum product called naptha was released.  On February 21, 2022, six contractors were burned in an explosion at the Garyville refinery.  A shelter in place was ordered after an incident at the Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery on June 27, 2023.  A worker was killed in a fire at the Texas City refinery on May 15, 2023.

There have been a number of incidents at industrial and manufacturing plants.  There was a dust explosion at the Poet Ethanol Plant in Shell Rock, Iowa on November 24, 2023.  There was an explosion at the Hoffinger Industries manufacturing plant in West Helena, Arkansas on November 28, 2023.  There was a chemical explosion in Nashua, New Hampshire on November 30, 2023.  There was a chemical release at the Altivia complex in La Porte, Texas on December 4, 2023.

Refineries and industrial facilities can pose significant dangers both to workers and to the general public.  When dangerous work is involved, extra precautions must be taken, especially when fires and explosions can occur.  Equipment must be properly inspected and maintained to ensure that accidents do not occur and that hardworking Americans are not hurt.
