Vornado has issued a recall for about 2 million handheld garment steamers across the United States, with an additional 13,000 units in Canada, after identifying a serious burn hazard that poses a threat to users. The recall was announced on February 8, 2024.

Models and Colors Affected

This recall impacts several models: SF-425, SF-435, SF-440, SF-445, SF-447, VS-410, and SI-428. The affected colors include white, black, light pink, hot pink, sage green, orange, teal blue for the SF-435 model, and primarily white for the other models, with the VS-410 available in black.

Hazards Posed

The recall was initiated following 122 reports of the steamers expelling or spitting hot water during heating or use, leading to 23 burn injuries. This defect creates a significant risk of serious burns to consumers, prompting Vornado’s decision to recall.

Availability and Purchase Details

The recalled garment steamers were available from July 2009 through January 2024 at various retailers, including Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, and online platforms like Amazon.com, Vornado.com, sihomecomfort.com, and Steamfast.com.

Burned by the Vornado Garment Steamer?

Handheld steamers, while incredibly convenient for removing wrinkles from clothing and refreshing fabrics, carry a significant risk of causing burns that consumers should be aware of. The primary concern is the high temperature of the steam, which is capable of causing immediate skin burns upon contact. This risk is particularly acute when the steamer is used improperly or if there’s accidental skin exposure during use. Moreover, the compact and portable nature of handheld steamers means they are often used in tight spaces or while garments are being worn, increasing the likelihood of accidental steam contact with the skin. Such burns can range from mild redness and irritation to severe injuries requiring medical attention. Awareness and adherence to safety instructions are crucial to minimize these risks, underscoring the need for users to exercise caution and use protective measures, such as gloves, when operating these devices.

Victims of steam burns may not only face physical pain and suffering but also incur medical expenses for burn treatment and recovery. If a handheld steamer was defective, improperly labeled, or lacked adequate safety warnings, manufacturers and retailers could be held liable for negligence.  Injuries resulting from defective products can have profound impacts on individuals’ lives, requiring legal representation. Experienced attorneys can navigate the complexities of product liability claims, ensuring that victims receive the compensation they deserve for their injuries and losses. This includes medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
