To prevent further deaths, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Essential Medical Supply Inc. are reissuing a recall notice for four distinct models of the company’s Endurance Hand Bed Rails. This announcement comes after two additional fatalities were reported since a prior 2021 recall, underscoring a persistent entrapment hazard.
In December 2022, an 86-year-old man tragically lost his life at an assisted living facility in Connecticut, while a 99-year-old man met a similar fate in his California home in August 2023. These incidents are identical to the death of an 86-year-old man in California, which caused the original 2021 recall.
The Hazard Explained
The danger in these designs lies in the design of these bed rails. When affixed to an adult’s bed, there is a severe risk of users becoming trapped either within the rail itself or between the rail and the side of the mattress. Getting trapped in the rail presents a risk of asphyxiation and can result in death. The affected models include:
- Hand Bed Rail (model P1410)
- Hand Bed Rail with Pouch (model P1410-P)
- Hand Bed Rail with Floor Support (model P1411)
- Hand Bed Rail with Floor Support with Pouch (model P1411-P)
Consumers can identify the recalled bed rails by looking for the “Essential Medical Supply, Inc.” name and the model number printed on a label on the bed rail’s grip handle. The recalled bed rails were available for purchase across the United States in medical supply stores and online platforms like Amazon and Walmart from October 2006 through December 2021
