by | May 20, 2024 | Industrial Accident, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly accident involving a forklift in Cheektowaga, New York on May 15, 2024.  On Wednesday afternoon, a worker at Sonwil Distribution was discovered pinned by a forklift.  He was unable to be saved when life-saving efforts were attempted.  The victim has been identified as Carlos Matos, a resident of Buffalo.  The incident remains under investigation.

Forklifts are essential tools in many industrial and warehouse settings, facilitating the efficient movement of heavy materials. However, they also pose significant safety risks, particularly the danger of workers being pinned by these powerful machines. Understanding the specific hazards associated with forklift operation and implementing stringent safety measures is crucial to protect workers from being pinned and sustaining serious injuries.

One of the primary causes of forklift pinning accidents is improper operation. Forklifts can easily tip over if not driven carefully, especially when carrying heavy loads or navigating uneven surfaces. When a forklift tips over or moves unexpectedly, workers can become trapped between the forklift and a solid object, such as a wall, rack, or another piece of equipment. Additionally, poor visibility and blind spots can lead to collisions, where workers might not see the forklift approaching until it is too late. The consequences of being pinned by a forklift can be severe, including crushing injuries, broken bones, internal injuries, and, in extreme cases, fatalities. These injuries often require extensive medical treatment and can result in long-term disability or loss of mobility.

Preventing forklift pinning accidents requires a combination of proper training, adherence to safety protocols, and regular maintenance. Ensuring that all forklift operators are thoroughly trained and certified is essential. Training should cover safe driving practices, load management, and awareness of surroundings. Employers should enforce strict safety protocols, such as maintaining clear communication between operators and other workers, using spotters in high-traffic areas, and establishing designated pedestrian pathways to keep workers away from forklift operating zones. Regular maintenance of forklifts is also critical to ensure that they are in good working condition and to prevent mechanical failures that could lead to accidents.

Creating a culture of safety within the workplace is vital to reducing the risk of forklift pinning accidents. This involves ongoing education and awareness programs to remind workers of the dangers associated with forklift operations and the importance of following safety procedures. Encouraging workers to report unsafe conditions or near-misses without fear of retaliation can help identify potential hazards before they result in accidents. Additionally, conducting regular safety audits and risk assessments can help employers identify areas where improvements are needed and ensure that all safety measures are being effectively implemented. By fostering a proactive approach to safety, workplaces can significantly reduce the risk of forklift-related injuries and create a safer environment for all employees.
