Deadly Semi-Truck Crash in Lubbock County, Texas

by | Jul 7, 2024 | Auto Accident, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly crash involving an 18-wheeler in Lubbock County, Texas on July 5, 2024.  According to reports, an 18-wheeler was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 84 when it veered into the northbound lanes of travel.  The Kenworth semi-truck crashed into a Hyundai Accent.  The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.  The victim has been identified as Kevin Ortiz of Bovina, Texas.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this loss.

The importance of 18-wheelers staying in their designated lanes of traffic on highways cannot be overstated. Due to their size and weight, these large vehicles require more space and stability to maneuver safely. When 18-wheelers maintain their lanes, it helps ensure a predictable flow of traffic, reducing the likelihood of accidents. Staying within the lane minimizes the risk of sideswiping other vehicles, which can be particularly dangerous given the significant difference in mass and momentum between an 18-wheeler and a passenger car. Additionally, maintaining lane discipline allows other drivers to anticipate the truck’s movements, enhancing overall road safety.

Several factors can cause 18-wheelers to veer into oncoming traffic, even under clear and dry weather conditions. One common cause is driver fatigue. Long hours on the road can lead to drowsiness and reduced reaction times, causing the driver to drift out of their lane unintentionally. Despite regulations limiting driving hours, some drivers may push beyond their limits, increasing the risk of fatigue-related incidents. Ensuring that drivers adhere to mandated rest periods and encouraging regular breaks can significantly reduce this risk.

Mechanical failures are another potential cause of lane deviation for 18-wheelers. Issues such as tire blowouts, brake failures, or steering malfunctions can suddenly impair the driver’s ability to control the vehicle. A blown tire, for instance, can cause the truck to swerve sharply, while brake or steering issues can prevent the driver from maintaining a steady course. Regular maintenance and thorough pre-trip inspections are crucial to identifying and addressing potential mechanical problems before they lead to accidents.

Distracted driving is also a significant contributor to 18-wheelers veering into oncoming traffic. Activities such as using a mobile phone, adjusting the radio, eating, or even daydreaming can take the driver’s attention away from the road. Given the size and weight of an 18-wheeler, even a momentary lapse in concentration can have severe consequences. Strict enforcement of regulations against distracted driving and promoting awareness of its dangers are essential measures to ensure that drivers remain focused and maintain lane discipline.

There have been a number of recent accidents involving vehicles, resulting in severe injuries and sometimes death.  There was a crash involving multiple 18-wheelers near Port Allen, Louisiana on June 30, 2024.  An 18-wheeler struck another vehicle while attempting to make a left turn from the center lane in Amarillo, Texas on July 2, 2024.  An 18-wheeler collided with a stalled vehicle on Loop 610 North in Houston, Texas on July 3, 2024.
