Seven Killed in Pilatus PC-12/47E Plane Crash in Wyoming

by | Jul 28, 2024 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly plane crash in Campbell County, Wyoming on July 26, 2024.  The plane, a Pilatus PC-12/47E, crashed Friday afternoon.  According to the NTSB, the plane may have experienced problems with its auto pilot before the crash.  Seven people were killed in the crash.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this deadly crash.

The Pilatus PC-12/47E is renowned for its versatility and reliability, often used in various roles ranging from executive transport to medical evacuations. However, like any sophisticated aircraft, it relies heavily on its autopilot system to enhance safety and operational efficiency. An autopilot failure in a Pilatus PC-12/47E can pose significant risks, potentially leading to challenging situations for the pilot and compromising the safety of the flight. Understanding these risks and how to mitigate them is crucial for operators and pilots of this aircraft.

One of the primary risks associated with autopilot failure is the sudden need for manual control, which can be particularly demanding during critical phases of flight such as takeoff, landing, or in adverse weather conditions. The Pilatus PC-12/47E can be flown by a single pilot, and the abrupt loss of autopilot functionality can significantly increase the pilot’s workload.

Autopilot systems are also integral to maintaining stable flight and ensuring precise navigation. A failure can disrupt these functions, leading to deviations from the intended flight path or altitude. In busy airspace or under instrument flight rules (IFR), such deviations can result in a loss of separation from other aircraft, increasing the risk of mid-air collisions. Additionally, without the autopilot’s assistance, the pilot must manually manage all aspects of flight control, which can be particularly challenging in poor visibility or turbulent conditions.

Another critical risk is the potential for cascading system failures. The autopilot in the Pilatus PC-12/47E is interconnected with other avionics and flight systems. An autopilot failure might indicate broader issues within the aircraft’s electronic systems, potentially leading to further malfunctions. This scenario can exacerbate the situation, requiring the pilot to manage multiple system failures simultaneously, which is both demanding and hazardous.

To mitigate the risks associated with autopilot failure, thorough training and preparedness are essential. Pilots should be well-versed in manual flying skills and regularly practice handling autopilot malfunctions through simulation and emergency drills. Regular maintenance and pre-flight checks of the autopilot system can help identify potential issues before they lead to in-flight failures. Additionally, maintaining clear communication with air traffic control and following established emergency procedures can help manage the situation effectively and ensure the safety of the flight
