16 Workers Hospitalized after Chemical Exposure at Great Wolf Lodge in Webster, Texas

by | Aug 7, 2024 | Chemical Release, Personal Injury

There was a chemical exposure incident at the Great Wolf Lodge in Webster, Texas on August 7, 2024.  According to reports, workers were exposed to improperly mixed chemicals at the facility.  The indoor water park was hosting its grand opening when the incident occurred.  Sixteen workers were taken to local hospitals as a result of the exposure.

Exposure to improperly mixed pool chemicals can pose significant health and safety risks, not only to pool maintenance workers but also to swimmers and individuals in the surrounding areas. When pool chemicals are mixed improperly, they can create hazardous chemical reactions that may release toxic gases or create harmful compounds. In many cases, the specific chemicals involved in these reactions may be unknown, which adds an element of unpredictability and danger. These risks underscore the importance of handling pool chemicals with care and following strict safety guidelines to prevent accidents and health hazards.

One of the most dangerous outcomes of improperly mixed pool chemicals is the release of toxic gases. Chlorine-based products, when mixed with acids, can release chlorine gas, a highly toxic substance that can cause severe respiratory distress. Symptoms of chlorine gas exposure include coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and in severe cases, respiratory failure. Even low levels of exposure can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, and prolonged exposure can lead to long-term respiratory issues. In enclosed spaces such as indoor pool facilities or storage rooms, the risk of gas accumulation is higher, posing an even greater threat to individuals present.

Chemical burns and skin irritation are also significant risks associated with exposure to improperly mixed pool chemicals. Many pool chemicals are highly corrosive and can cause severe skin damage upon contact. If chemicals are mixed inappropriately, the resultant compounds can exacerbate these risks, leading to painful burns and irritation. Without proper personal protective equipment, individuals handling these chemicals are particularly vulnerable. Chemical burns can range from mild to severe, potentially requiring medical treatment and leaving long-term scars. Eye exposure can also occur, leading to irritation or even vision impairment.

In addition to immediate health risks, improperly mixed pool chemicals can have environmental impacts that pose indirect risks to human health. Spills or leaks resulting from improper mixing can contaminate surrounding soil and water sources, affecting local ecosystems and potentially entering drinking water supplies. Chemical contamination can harm aquatic life and disrupt the balance of local ecosystems. Human exposure to contaminated water can lead to additional health issues, emphasizing the importance of proper chemical handling and disposal. Implementing comprehensive safety protocols and training for those handling pool chemicals is crucial to mitigate these risks and ensure the safety of individuals and the environment.

It is unclear what chemicals were involved in the incident.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, exposure to chlorine can result in significant symptoms:

During or immediately after exposure to high concentrations of chlorine, the following signs and symptoms may develop:

  • Blurred vision
  • Burning sensation in the nose, throat, lungs, and eyes
  • Coughing
  • Coughing up white to pink-tinged fluid that may be delayed by a few hours
  • Chest tightness
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath (These may appear immediately if high concentrations are inhaled or they may be delayed if low concentrations are inhaled.)
  • Eye tearing
  • Frostbite if exposed to liquified chlorine
  • Nausea
  • Rapid and shallow breathing
  • Respiratory failure
  • Skin pain, redness, blisters
  • Vomiting
  • Wheezing
