Cessna A185F Seaplane Crash in Kent, Washington

by | Aug 25, 2024 | Aviation Accident, Personal Injury

There was a plane crash in in Kent, Washington on August 24, 2024.  The plane, a single-engine Cessna A185F Seaplane, crashed into Lake Meridian 300 feet from shore.  The plane ended up upside down in the water.  The pilot was rescued by others on the water, and taken to a local hospital where he is reported to be in critical condition.  The accident remains under investigation at this time.

A seaplane crash into a lake, where the aircraft ends up upside down in the water, can be caused by a variety of factors, with one of the most common being a misjudgment during landing. Seaplanes require precise control and coordination to land safely on water, which is inherently more unpredictable than a solid runway. If the pilot misjudges the approach angle or the descent speed, the floats or hull may hit the water too hard or at an incorrect angle. This can cause the plane to bounce, skip, or even flip over upon impact, leading to an inverted crash in the water. Turbulence or sudden wind changes during landing can exacerbate these issues, making it even more difficult for the pilot to execute a safe landing.

Mechanical failure is another potential cause of a seaplane crashing into a lake. Issues with the aircraft’s control surfaces, such as the ailerons, rudder, or elevators, can lead to a loss of control, especially during the critical moments of takeoff or landing. For example, if the plane’s rudder or elevators malfunction during the landing approach, the pilot may be unable to maintain proper alignment or control the descent rate, resulting in a hard impact with the water that could cause the plane to flip over. Engine failure, particularly if it occurs during takeoff or landing, can also lead to a crash, as the pilot may not have enough time or altitude to make a safe emergency landing.

Environmental factors such as rough water conditions, floating debris, or hidden underwater obstacles also pose significant risks to seaplanes. Choppy or rough water can create uneven surfaces for landing, increasing the likelihood of the plane catching a float or tipping over during landing. Debris or submerged objects that are not visible from the surface can strike the floats or hull, causing structural damage or destabilizing the plane. If the plane strikes an object during landing or takeoff, it could flip over, leaving the aircraft upside down in the water. Pilots must carefully assess the landing area for such hazards, but these dangers are not always visible, especially in murky or turbulent water.

There have been a number of recent plane accidents in 2024.  A Piper PA28 crashed shortly after taking off from McClellan Airfield in Sacramento, California on August 4, 2024.  A Beechcraft BE33 crashed in Yukon, Oklahoma on August 6, 2024.  A Cessna 182 crashed with three people on board near Augusta, Montana on August 8, 2024.  A Piper J3C-65 crashed in Mooresburg, Tennessee on August 16, 2024.  A Cessna Citation 550 jet crashed into a neighborhood in Odessa, Texas on August 16, 2024.
