Four Killed in Piper PA-46 Crash in Madison County, Indiana

by | Sep 10, 2024 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly plane crash in Madison County, Indiana on September 6, 2024.  The plane, a single-engine Piper PA-46, crashed in a corn field near the Anderson Municipal Airport.  Reports indicate on its initial approach to the airport, the plane came in too high for a safe landing and was told to reroute.  The pilot may have been attempting to turn back to the airport for a second attempt at landing when the crash occurred.  All four people on board were killed in the crash.  The accident remains under investigation at this time.

A Piper PA46 could crash after an aborted landing attempt for several reasons, one of the most significant being spatial disorientation. After being instructed by air traffic control (ATC) to reroute due to coming in too high, the pilot would have needed to adjust their approach, often requiring rapid altitude changes, turns, and throttle adjustments. In this scenario, especially if weather conditions were poor or visibility was limited, the pilot might have become disoriented, particularly if they were flying at a low altitude. Spatial disorientation can cause pilots to misjudge their altitude or attitude, leading to a loss of control and potentially causing a crash.

Mechanical failure could also be a contributing factor in this type of crash. The Piper PA46 relies heavily on its engine and avionics systems to safely maneuver during critical phases of flight, including a go-around or aborted landing. If the plane experienced an engine failure or malfunction in its control surfaces while rerouting after the initial landing attempt, the pilot may have struggled to maintain control of the aircraft. Mechanical issues, particularly those that affect the plane’s ability to maintain altitude or perform necessary adjustments, could lead to a crash shortly after the aborted landing attempt.

Another possible cause of the crash could be aerodynamic stall. After aborting the landing, the pilot would need to quickly ascend and reposition the aircraft for a second approach. In these situations, pilots sometimes increase the angle of attack too steeply in an effort to gain altitude, leading to a stall. A stall occurs when the wings no longer generate sufficient lift, causing the aircraft to lose altitude rapidly. If the stall happens at a low altitude, such as during the climb after aborting a landing, there may not be enough time to recover before the plane crashes.

There have been a number of recent plane accidents in 2024.  A Cessna 182 crashed with three people on board near Augusta, Montana on August 8, 2024.  A Piper J3C-65 crashed in Mooresburg, Tennessee on August 16, 2024.  A Cessna Citation 550 crashed in Odessa, Texas on August 16, 2024.  A Cessna 421C crashed into a group of townhomes in Fairview, Oregon on August 31, 2024.  A Piper PA28 crashed near the Somerset Airport in Bedminster, New Jersey on September 4, 2024.
