Three Killed in Bridge Collapse in Simpson County, Mississippi

by | Oct 17, 2024 | Construction Accident, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly construction accident in Simpson County, Mississippi on October 16, 2024.  According to reports, a bridge collapsed while a group of construction workers prepared it for an upcoming demolition.  At the time, seven workers were using heavy equipment on the bridge.  The workers fell 40 feet when the collapse occurred.  Three workers were killed, and four others seriously injured.  The project was being performed by T.L. Wallace Construction.  The deceased victims have been identified as Charles Badger, Kevin Malone and Charles Igleharte.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this deadly incident.

The tragic bridge collapse may have been caused by several factors commonly associated with structural failures during demolition preparation. One potential cause could be the compromised integrity of the bridge itself, as it was being prepared for demolition. Bridges scheduled for demolition are often older structures with deteriorated materials, such as weakened concrete or corroded steel supports. When heavy equipment is used on a structure that is already compromised, it can exacerbate existing weaknesses, leading to a sudden collapse.

Another possible contributing factor to the collapse could have been overloading the bridge with heavy equipment. With workers using machinery simultaneously on the structure, the combined weight may have exceeded the bridge’s capacity, especially given its deteriorated state. Bridges are designed to support specific loads, and if the equipment used for demolition preparation was too heavy or placed unevenly on the structure, it could have caused the bridge to fail. This is especially likely if load distribution was not carefully managed during the work.

The collapse could also be attributed to improper sequencing of the demolition preparation activities. When preparing a bridge for demolition, specific steps must be followed to ensure structural stability is maintained throughout the process. If critical supports were removed too early or if the structure was destabilized by cutting or dismantling certain elements out of sequence, it could have compromised the bridge’s ability to support the workers and equipment. Ensuring that all demolition preparation follows a well-established safety plan is crucial to preventing such incidents.

Lastly, insufficient safety inspections or failure to detect potential hazards before beginning the work may have played a role in the accident. A thorough structural assessment should be conducted to identify any areas of the bridge that are particularly weak or at risk of failure. If these inspections were not carried out properly or if signs of instability were overlooked, the workers might not have been aware of the dangers they faced. Moving forward, the investigation will likely focus on evaluating whether safety protocols were followed and whether adequate structural assessments were performed before starting the project.

Tragically, there have been a number of recent deaths and injuries on construction projects.  A worker drowned on the Manadas Wastewater Treatment Plant construction project in Laredo, Texas on September 12, 2024.  A worker was crushed while operating an excavator in Spartanburg County, South Carolina on September 24, 2024.  There was a deadly construction accident at the Beaumont Clean Ammonia Plant in Jefferson County, Texas on October 3, 2024.

Despite being a vital part of the economy, construction projects often pose severe hazards both to construction workers and to the general public if precautions are not taken.  Each construction project poses its own unique risks and hazards based on the work being done.  Risks that may present themselves during a project must be carefully evaluated before the job begins.
