Two Semi-Trucks in Deadly Crash near Dalhart, Texas

by | Oct 14, 2024 | Auto Accident, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly crash involving two 18-wheelers near Dalhart, Texas on October 10, 2024.  According to reports, an 18-wheeler was pulling out of a driveway onto the eastbound lanes of FM 281.  While making the turn, the 18-wheeler’s trailer became detached from the truck tractor, blocking both lanes of the road.   A second 18-wheeler collided with the trailer which couldn’t be avoided.  The driver of the second 18-wheeler was killed as a result.  The victim has been identified as Jesus Castillo-Rosas, of Dumas, Texas.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this tragic accident.

The tragic crash which claimed the life of Jesus Castillo-Rosas, could have been prevented through various safety measures. One of the primary factors leading to the accident was the detachment of the trailer from the truck tractor while the first 18-wheeler was pulling out of a driveway onto FM 281. Regular and thorough maintenance checks of the coupling system between the tractor and trailer could have identified any potential issues that might cause the trailer to detach. Ensuring that all parts of the truck, including the hitch and locking mechanisms, are in good condition and properly secured is crucial to preventing such dangerous incidents.

Another preventative measure would have been the use of improved safety procedures when entering busy roadways. Given the size and weight of 18-wheelers, pulling onto a highway or major road requires extra caution. Properly trained drivers are more likely to assess traffic conditions, wait for a safer gap in oncoming traffic, and make sure their rig is securely attached before proceeding. In this case, additional caution could have prevented the trailer from becoming an obstruction that the second 18-wheeler could not avoid. Driver education and adherence to stringent safety protocols play a vital role in preventing accidents like this one.

Technology could also have played a key role in preventing this tragic crash. Electronic safety systems like trailer monitoring and advanced coupling sensors can alert drivers to any issues with their trailer’s connection before they begin driving or while in transit. These technologies can provide real-time updates, ensuring that the trailer is properly secured to the tractor at all times. If a trailer begins to detach or shows signs of instability, the driver would be alerted immediately, allowing them to take preventive action before a dangerous situation arises. Such technology is becoming increasingly common and could save lives if implemented widely across the trucking industry.

Lastly, road design and infrastructure improvements can contribute to the prevention of accidents like this. Better-designed entry and exit points for commercial trucks, particularly near high-traffic areas, can make it easier and safer for 18-wheelers to merge onto roadways. A combination of proper vehicle maintenance, advanced safety technology, and improved infrastructure could have helped prevent the unfortunate death of Jesus Castillo-Rosas.
