by | Nov 29, 2024 | Construction Accident, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly construction accident in Hempstead County, Arkansas on November 26, 2024.  According to reports, a worker was killed while picking up cones in a construction zone on Highway 32.  The victim fell off of the truck he was on, before being hit by the truck.  The victim has been identified a Brandon Lee Jones.  Jones was an employee with the Arkansas Department of Transportation.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this deadly incident.

The tragic construction accident in Hempstead County, Arkansas highlights the inherent risks faced by workers in highway construction zones. Jones was reportedly killed while picking up cones, falling from a truck and then being struck by the vehicle. This devastating incident underscores the critical need for enhanced safety measures and protocols to protect workers performing essential tasks on busy roadways. Implementing safer work practices and improved equipment could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

One way to reduce the risk of accidents like this is to use mechanized equipment for cone retrieval, eliminating the need for workers to ride on moving trucks or perform tasks from elevated positions. Specialized cone-picking machines are designed to automate the collection process, reducing worker exposure to traffic and other hazards. By minimizing direct interaction with the roadway and moving vehicles, these machines can significantly enhance safety in construction zones.

Another preventative measure is the use of fall protection systems for workers performing tasks on trucks. Fall protection harnesses or guardrails installed on the truck could have helped prevent Jones from falling. Ensuring that workers have secure footing and safety equipment while performing duties on elevated platforms is critical, especially in dynamic environments like highway construction zones. Training programs that emphasize fall prevention and proper use of protective equipment are also vital components of a comprehensive safety strategy.

Traffic management in construction zones is another crucial factor. Creating a larger buffer zone between active work areas and passing vehicles can give drivers more time to react and workers more space to perform their tasks safely. This can be achieved through the use of additional signage, barriers, and reduced speed limits in construction zones. Enhanced visibility measures, such as reflective gear and high-visibility lighting, also play an essential role in protecting workers during early morning or late evening shifts.

Lastly, thorough training and safety protocols tailored to the specific tasks being performed are essential. Workers should receive regular instruction on how to safely load and unload cones, operate in proximity to moving vehicles, and respond to emergency situations. Employers and transportation departments must prioritize ongoing safety assessments and adopt innovations in equipment and work practices to address potential risks. By focusing on these preventative measures, the likelihood of accidents like the one in Hempstead County can be greatly reduced, protecting the lives of those who serve in hazardous environments.

Tragically, there have been a number of recent deaths and injuries on construction projects.  There was a crane accident in Colorado Springs, Colorado on November 4, 2024.  An 18-wheeler collided with an aerial lift in Chicago, Illinois on November 4, 2024.  A worker was killed when hot asphalt was poured on him at a construction project in Jackson, Mississippi on November 4, 2024.  A worker fell from scaffolding at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida on November 18, 2024.

Despite being a vital part of the economy, construction projects often pose severe hazards both to construction workers and to the general public if precautions are not taken.  Each construction project poses its own unique risks and hazards based on the work being done.  Risks that may present themselves during a project must be carefully evaluated before the job begins.
