Deadly Crash Involving Loose Tire in Midland, Texas

by | Nov 6, 2024 | Auto Accident, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly auto accident in Midland County, Texas on November 1, 2024.  According to reports, the deadly crash occurred after a side tire on a trailer being pulled by a Ford F-350 broke free while the vehicle traveled westbound on Loop 250.  The tire travelled into the oncoming lanes of traffic, before hitting the windshield of another Ford pickup truck heading eastbound on Loop 250.  The driver of the second truck lost control before hitting the cables in the roadway’s median.  The driver was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead the following day.  The victim has been identified as Steven Michael Basden.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this deadly crash.

The tragic accident in Midland, Texas, underscores the importance of rigorous vehicle and trailer maintenance, especially for high-use, heavy-duty vehicles like the Ford F-350 involved in this crash. One of the main factors contributing to the accident was the detached side tire from the trailer, which eventually caused a fatal collision with the oncoming Ford pickup truck. Regular, comprehensive maintenance checks on trailers, particularly the integrity of tires, axles, and attachments, could have prevented this tragedy. A routine inspection might have revealed issues with the tire, axle, or lug nuts, allowing for proactive repairs or replacements before they could become a hazard on the road.

Another potential preventive measure would be ensuring that trailers are equipped with safety chains or backup securing mechanisms. These additional safety features can help keep detached components attached to the trailer or minimize their travel distance if they become dislodged. For example, a properly installed secondary safety chain could have helped keep the detached tire from crossing into oncoming traffic, thus preventing the impact with the other truck. Regulatory enforcement that mandates the use of such safety equipment on all trailers could further reduce the chances of similar incidents in the future.

Furthermore, driver awareness and diligence in pre-trip inspections play a crucial role in preventing accidents like this. Commercial and heavy-duty drivers should be trained to perform thorough pre-trip inspections, specifically examining critical components like tires, lug nuts, and trailer attachments before getting on the road. A careful walk-around inspection might have identified any visible signs of wear, looseness, or damage, giving the driver the chance to address these issues before the trip began. Strengthening training programs for drivers who regularly tow trailers could enhance road safety, ensuring they’re fully equipped to spot and respond to potential issues.

Enhanced vehicle and trailer safety standards, particularly around tire and axle attachment mechanisms, could also contribute to accident prevention. Manufacturers can improve safety by designing reinforced attachments and developing more secure lug nut and bolt systems for trailers, especially those intended for heavy-duty use. These enhanced safety designs could ensure that trailer components, including tires, remain secured even under high-stress conditions like highway travel. Additionally, implementing more stringent inspection regulations for trailers and requiring periodic certification for roadworthiness could significantly reduce the risk of mechanical failure incidents on public roads.

Finally, public awareness campaigns focused on trailer safety could help educate all drivers, not just commercial operators, on the importance of securing trailers and the potential risks of mechanical failures. Drivers sharing the road with trailers should also be educated on maintaining a safe distance and being vigilant around heavy-duty vehicles, especially in high-speed zones like highways. Through a combination of public awareness, rigorous maintenance practices, advanced safety standards, and proactive legislation, accidents like this one in Midland could be prevented, sparing other families the heartbreak experienced by the loved ones of Steven Michael Basden.
