Chervon North America has recently announced a recall of approximately 63,000 Skil brand 40-volt lithium-ion batteries due to a substantial risk of overheating, smoking, melting, and even catching fire. These hazards can lead to significant injuries and property damage. If you own one of these batteries, immediate action is essential to prevent harm.

Key Details of the Recall

This recall involves Skil 40-volt 5.0Ah lithium-ion batteries, identified by the model number BY8708-00. These batteries were manufactured before May 1, 2021, and are labeled with “SKIL” and “PWRCORE 40.” While not all batteries with this branding are affected, specific manufacturing date codes have been identified as part of the recall. The batteries were sold individually and bundled with Skil battery-powered lawn mowers and chargers, including the Brushless 20-inch Push and Self-Propelled Mowers. Affected units were sold through major retailers such as Lowe’s, Amazon, Walmart, and their respective websites, as well as other hardware and home improvement stores.

If you’re unsure whether your battery is part of the recall, detailed information about the affected date codes and product identification is available on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall website. It is crucial to check if your battery is impacted to protect yourself and those around you.

The Risks: Overheating, Fires, and Burns

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Chervon North America has received 100 reports of these batteries overheating, melting, smoking, or catching fire. Tragically, these incidents include 49 reports of property damage and eight reports of injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation. The dangers posed by these batteries extend beyond personal injuries, with the potential for severe property damage due to fire.

These incidents highlight the serious hazards associated with the use of these batteries. Even if you have not experienced problems yet, continued use of the recalled batteries could result in dangerous outcomes. The importance of addressing this recall cannot be overstated.
