Igloo Recalls Over 1 Million Coolers Due to Amputation Risk

by | Feb 14, 2025 | Personal Injury, Product Recalls

A major product recall has been issued for over 1 million Igloo coolers sold in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico due to a serious safety hazard linked to their tow handles. The recall affects the “Igloo 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers,” which have been found to pose a potential crushing and amputation risk to users. Reports indicate that the cooler’s tow handle can unexpectedly pinch a user’s fingertips against the cooler body, leading to severe injuries, including amputations, fractures, and deep lacerations. Consumers who own one of these recalled coolers should immediately stop using the product and contact Igloo for a free replacement handle to eliminate the hazard.

Details of the Recall

The recall affects Igloo 90-quart rolling coolers sold between 2019 and January 2025 at major retailers, including Costco, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Amazon. The coolers were sold in multiple colors and feature the IGLOO logo printed on the side. The affected models were manufactured in the U.S. prior to January 2024 and were priced between $80 and $140. In total, approximately 1.06 million units were sold in the U.S., with an additional 47,000 in Canada and 23,000 in Mexico.

Reported Injuries and Consumer Risk

According to reports from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), at least 12 individuals in the U.S. have suffered injuries from using these coolers, with some incidents resulting in fingertip amputations, broken bones, and serious cuts. Although no injuries have been reported in Canada or Mexico, the risk remains significant for anyone using the product. The handle design has been identified as the primary cause of the injuries, as it creates a pinching effect when the handle is pulled, trapping fingers against the cooler’s hard surface. Given the severity of these injuries, the recall is a critical safety measure to prevent further harm.

Legal Considerations for Injured Consumers

Individuals who have suffered injuries due to the defective handle on these coolers may have legal grounds to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. Product manufacturers have a legal duty to ensure that their products are safe for consumer use, and when a defect leads to serious injuries, affected individuals may be entitled to pursue a product liability claim. If you or a loved one has been injured while using one of the recalled Igloo coolers, consulting with a personal injury attorney can help you understand your legal rights and explore options for seeking compensation.
