Tugboat THOR Catches Fire on Delaware River

by | Feb 20, 2025 | Maritime Law, Personal Injury

There was a fire on board the tugboat THOR on February 18, 2025.  According to reports, the boat was towing two barges on the Delaware River near Pea Patch Island when it caught fire.  The fire is believed to have started in the tug’s engine room, causing the vessel to lose steering.  The crew abandoned ship and were luckily rescued by a Samaritan vessel.  The tugboat was built by Main Iron Works in Houma, Louisiana and was operated by Albemarle Tug Company.  It is unclear if anyone was injured, or the cause of the incident.

A fire aboard a tugboat raises serious concerns about maritime safety, vessel maintenance, and emergency preparedness. According to reports, the fire originated in the engine room, a critical area that houses essential mechanical and electrical systems. Engine room fires are among the most dangerous maritime incidents, as they can quickly spread, compromise vessel control, and put the lives of crew members at significant risk. In this case, the fire led to a loss of steering, forcing the crew to abandon ship and seek rescue. Investigators will likely focus on what sparked the fire and whether mechanical failure, electrical malfunctions, or improper maintenance contributed to the accident.

One potential cause of an engine room fire is fuel or oil leaks, which can ignite if they come into contact with hot engine components or electrical wiring. Tugboats rely on powerful diesel engines that operate under intense heat and pressure, making them vulnerable to fluid leaks that can become fire hazards. If fuel lines, hydraulic hoses, or lubrication systems developed a leak due to wear and tear, poor maintenance, or manufacturer defects, the high-temperature environment of the engine room could have caused combustion. Investigators will likely examine whether routine maintenance was performed, and whether any prior mechanical issues had been reported before the fire broke out.

Another possible explanation for the fire is an electrical system failure. Tugboats like the THOR have complex electrical networks that power navigation systems, communication devices, and engine controls. Electrical fires can occur if wiring is faulty, overloaded circuits are present, or components overheat due to improper insulation or exposure to moisture. In an engine room, where electrical wiring is in close proximity to fuel sources, a short circuit or an arc flash could have ignited nearby flammable materials. Maritime investigators will likely assess whether the tugboat’s electrical systems were up to code and if any prior warnings of electrical malfunctions had been overlooked.

Another critical factor in this incident is emergency preparedness and fire suppression systems. Engine rooms are typically equipped with fire suppression systems such as CO2 flooding systems, fire-resistant insulation, and automatic shutoff controls to contain fires before they spread. If the fire suppression system failed or was not properly maintained, the fire may have escalated beyond control, forcing the crew to abandon ship. Investigators will likely review whether the fire suppression system was functional, whether crew members followed emergency protocols, and whether the crew had adequate firefighting training to respond effectively.

The THOR incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vessel maintenance, crew training, and fire prevention protocols in the maritime industry. Fires on tugboats can result in significant environmental hazards, economic losses, and potential injuries or fatalities. Ensuring that engine rooms are regularly inspected, fuel and electrical systems are properly maintained, and emergency fire suppression systems are in working order is crucial in preventing similar accidents in the future. As investigators work to determine the exact cause of this fire, this incident highlights the critical need for ongoing safety improvements in the maritime sector to protect both crew members and marine environments.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a vessel accident, it is crucial to consult an maritime attorney to protect your legal rights and pursue the compensation you deserve. Maritime accidents often stem fromequipment malfunctions, crew negligence, or unsafe working conditions, leading to serious injuries, lost wages, and even wrongful death. A boat fire can be a life-threatening event, resulting in long-term physical and emotional trauma for victims and their families. A maritime lawyer can thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident, establish liability, and fight for compensation covering medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages. Given the complex regulations governing offshore injuries and maritime claims, having strong legal representation is essential in holding negligent parties accountable and ensuring victims receive the justice and financial recovery they need.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  According to reports, a speedboat collided with an anchored sailboat in Buttonwood Sound near Key West, Florida on December 27, 2024.  The tugboat Patrick J. Studdert sank after a collision on the Mississippi River on December 29, 2024.  There was a deadly boat accident on Lake Texoma on December 27, 2024.  There was a boat explosion during a fuel transfer operation on the Sabine River in Orange County, Texas on February 1, 2025.  The fishing boat ANTHONY capsized 40 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of America on February 13, 2025.
