Helicopter Crash at Modesto Reservoir Leaves Two Injured

by | Mar 17, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Personal Injury

A helicopter crash at Modesto Reservoir in California on the morning of March 15, 2025 resulted in serious injuries for one person and temporarily shut down the waterway, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department. The helicopter crash, which occurred around 11 a.m., involved two people—both of whom were transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the incident and working to determine ownership of the aircraft.

As a precautionary measure, the reservoir’s waterway was immediately closed to visitors. Although Modesto Reservoir Regional Park remains open for recreational activities along the shoreline, the water is completely off-limits until further notice. Authorities have not provided a timeline for when the area may reopen.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Officials have not yet disclosed whether mechanical failure, weather conditions, or pilot error played a role in the incident. Additionally, the sheriff’s department is working to confirm the ownership of the helicopter.

About Modesto Reservoir

Located 20 miles east of Modesto near Waterford, Modesto Reservoir is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. With 3,200 acres of land and 2,800 acres of water, it attracts visitors for swimming, fishing, boating, camping, and picnicking. The closure of the waterway is expected to impact boating and fishing activities, though the park’s other facilities remain open to the public.

Legal Considerations in Helicopter Crashes

Helicopter crashes can result from a variety of factors, including mechanical malfunctions, pilot errors, and external environmental conditions. Victims and their families may have legal options if negligence or equipment failure is found to be a contributing cause of the accident. Aviation accident investigations typically involve multiple agencies, including the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), to determine liability and contributing factors.
