Pilot Killed in Cessna Citation Crash Shortly After Takeoff from Mesquite Metro Airport

by | Mar 13, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

A tragic plane crash occurred Thursday morning in Mesquite, Texas, when a Cessna Citation Jet went down shortly after taking off from the Mesquite Metro Airport. The aircraft crashed in a wooded area between a residential neighborhood and a church, bursting into flames upon impact. Reports indicate the plane took a steep nose dive after taking off from the airport. Firefighters responded quickly to contain the resulting fires, but unfortunately, the pilot, who was the only person on board, did not survive.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this deadly crash.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash, although there are a number of causes of small plane crashes. The National Transportation Safety Board is set to investigate the incident, analyzing potential factors such as mechanical failures, pilot error, or environmental conditions that may have contributed to the sudden descent. Witness accounts and video footage will also be examined to piece together what led to the fatal accident. As of now, officials have not released the pilot’s identity, and it remains unclear if the aircraft experienced distress before the crash.

Several factors could have contributed to the tragic crash of the Cessna CitationJet in Mesquite. Mechanical failure is one possibility, as even minor malfunctions in an aircraft’s critical systems—such as the engine, hydraulics, or avionics—can lead to a loss of control. If the plane suffered an issue shortly after takeoff, the pilot may not have had enough time or altitude to attempt an emergency landing. Investigators will likely examine maintenance records, the aircraft’s recent flight history, and any recovered components to determine whether a mechanical defect played a role in the crash.

Weather conditions at the time of the flight may also be considered. While no reports have indicated severe weather in the area, factors such as strong wind gusts, low visibility, or sudden air pressure changes can impact a plane’s stability. Even a relatively small aircraft like the CitationJet can experience difficulty in turbulent conditions, particularly at lower altitudes. The National Transportation Safety Board will likely review meteorological data to assess whether weather-related factors contributed to the plane’s sudden descent.

Bird strikes or external obstructions could be another potential cause. Aircraft that take off from smaller regional airports, such as Mesquite Metro Airport, may encounter birds or other airborne debris that can damage engines or flight control surfaces. If a bird strike occurred and affected engine performance, the plane may have lost power, making it difficult for the pilot to recover in such a short window. Additionally, drone interference or other unexpected airborne hazards cannot be ruled out without a thorough investigation.

Another factor investigators may examine is fuel contamination or engine failure. If the jet’s fuel was compromised by water or other contaminants, it could have caused a sudden loss of power. Fuel-related issues have been responsible for several past aviation accidents, especially when engines are starved of the necessary combustion mixture. Investigators will likely take fuel samples, inspect the plane’s fuel lines, and review records of the last refueling to determine whether this was a contributing factor in the crash.

There have been a number of recent plane accidents in 2025.  A Grumman American AA-5A Cheetah crashed after an engine stall during takeoff in Gladewater, Texas on February 17, 2025.  A United Airlines flight en route to Houston, Texas had to make an emergency landing in Waco, Texas following severe turbulence on March 2, 2025.  A Ciruss SR22 crashed at Grand Strand Airport in North Myrtle Beach on Thursday, March, 6, 2025.  A Beechcraft Bonanza crashed in Manheim Township, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
