One Dead, Five Missing After Boat Capsizes Off Florida Coast Near St. Lucie Inlet

by | Apr 14, 2025 | Maritime Law, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

A tragic boating accident unfolded off the coast of Florida over the weekend when a vessel carrying nine people capsized roughly 29 miles from the St. Lucie Inlet. Despite a rapid response from the U.S. Coast Guard and local rescue crews, one person was confirmed dead, five remain missing, and four individuals were pulled from the water and transported to safety.

The U.S. Coast Guard was alerted to the emergency after a good Samaritan reported the overturned boat floating offshore. The vessel, which was carrying nine individuals, is believed to have capsized on Friday, though rescue operations intensified Sunday following the distress call. Crews from the Coast Guard quickly launched an extensive search and rescue operation, deploying helicopters, boats, and search planes to comb the waters off Florida’s southeastern coast. Four of the passengers were successfully rescued from the water. The survivors were transported by helicopter to Stuart Airport and then taken to Cleveland South Hospital for medical treatment by Martin County Fire Rescue teams.

According to officials, one of the survivors sustained serious injuries, while the other three were treated for non-life-threatening conditions. The victims rescued from the capsized vessel faced exposure to open water for an extended period before help arrived.

Sadly, one deceased individual was recovered during the search, and five other passengers remain unaccounted for as the Coast Guard continues its efforts to locate them.

When a boat capsizes miles offshore, survival becomes a race against time. Exposure to the elements, lack of flotation devices, and the distance from rescue resources all contribute to the danger.
