Plane Carrying Six Crashes in Rural New York Field, Investigation Underway

by | Apr 13, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

A small twin-engine aircraft crashed into a remote field near Copake, New York, on the afternoon of April 12, 2025, claiming at least one life and prompting a large-scale emergency response. The plane, identified as a Mitsubishi MU-2B, was carrying six people on board and was en route to Columbia County Airport in Hudson when the tragic incident occurred.

Authorities received a 911 call shortly after noon reporting that a plane had gone down in an open field near Copake, a rural town about 50 miles south of Albany and close to the Massachusetts border. The aircraft had departed from Westchester County Airport and was scheduled to land in Hudson around 12:06 p.m., according to flight tracking data. However, the plane’s flight path ended abruptly just east of its intended destination.

Upon impact, the plane crashed into a muddy and difficult-to-access area, complicating recovery and rescue efforts. Fortunately, officials confirmed that the aircraft did not strike any buildings or structures during its descent, avoiding what could have been an even greater catastrophe.  Local authorities confirmed that at least one individual had died in the crash, but details regarding the other passengers and the extent of their injuries or fatalities were not immediately released.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has dispatched a team of investigators to the crash site. The investigation will focus on determining the cause of the crash, which remains unknown at this time. Investigators will review flight data, pilot communications, weather conditions, and maintenance records of the Mitsubishi MU-2B aircraft.

Investigators will closely examine these and other factors as part of their ongoing review.
