Tragic Construction Site Accident in Tucson Leaves One Worker Dead, Another Injured

by | Apr 18, 2025 | Construction Accident, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

A devastating construction site accident on Tucson’s northwest side claimed the life of one worker and left another seriously injured on April 17, 2025. The incident occurred near West Pecos Way and North Thornydale Road, just south of West Lambert Lane, as crews were engaged in underground utility work.

According to officials, the incident took place shortly after 8 a.m. as part of an active construction project. Two workers, identified as 20-year-old Dominic Herbert and 22-year-old Diego Miranda, were in a ditch when a nearby power pole was accidentally knocked over. The pole and live electrical wires reportedly fell into the trench where the men were working, leading to a fatal electrocution and serious injury. Herbert was pronounced dead at the scene. Miranda was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His condition has not been publicly updated, but family members have asked for continued prayers as he recovers.

According to reports, both individuals were employed by JW Civil, a Tucson-based construction company that specializes in earthwork and underground utility services. Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are working alongside local law enforcement to determine the circumstances that led to the collapse of the utility pole.

Risks of Utility Work in Active Power Zones

Trenching and utility work around live electrical infrastructure poses significant risks, even for experienced crews. When power lines are located near excavation zones, any accidental disturbance to poles or cables can result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Electrocution is among the leading causes of death in the construction industry, especially when procedures for identifying and isolating energized equipment are not strictly followed.

Legal Options for Victims and Their Families

In the aftermath of a fatal construction site accident, surviving family members may have legal recourse beyond workers’ compensation. If third-party negligence played a role — such as faulty equipment, inadequate subcontractor oversight, or utility company errors — it may be possible to pursue a wrongful death or personal injury lawsuit to recover damages.

These claims may help secure compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Loss of financial support
  • Emotional suffering and grief
  • Medical expenses and long-term care for injured workers
