Two Killed in Plane Crash Near Houma, Louisiana

by | Apr 5, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

A small aircraft crashed into a remote marshland between Raceland and Houma, Louisiana, on the evening of Wednesday, April 2, 2025, claiming the lives of both people on board. The crash site, located near the intersection of Highway 90 and Highway 182 in Lafourche Parish, remained difficult to access due to thick vegetation, waterlogged ground, and gusty wind conditions that persisted through the night.

The aircraft, a 1976 Cessna 210 L, departed from the New Orleans area and was en route to the Houma-Terrebonne Regional Airport when it went down shortly after 8:30 p.m. Authorities confirmed that the two individuals on board were 59-year-old Lyle Panepinto and 31-year-old Lauren Menkemeller. Panepinto, was the pilot and owner of Belle Chasse-based Southern Seaplane. Menkemeller was reportedly in training with the company at the time of the crash.  The bodies of both victims were later recovered.

Challenging Recovery and Hazardous Conditions

The location of the crash presented significant logistical challenges for first responders. With much of the wreckage submerged in marsh water and surrounded by unstable terrain, emergency personnel required the assistance of specialized equipment including marsh buggies, pontoon boats, and excavators to conduct recovery efforts. These types of remote, swampy crash sites can delay both victim recovery and investigative work, sometimes requiring days of coordinated effort.

In addition to the geographic hurdles, weather conditions at the time of the crash may have played a role. Reports indicate that wind speeds were particularly strong Wednesday night, which could have affected the aircraft’s stability or approach path. Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently working to determine whether weather, mechanical failure, or other operational factors contributed to the incident.

Legal Options for Families After Aviation Tragedies

Plane crashes—especially those involving private or small commercial aircraft—can raise difficult legal questions about liability and safety oversight. Families of victims may have the right to pursue claims if negligence, equipment failure, inadequate training, or operational missteps contributed to the incident.

Investigations often uncover whether the aircraft was properly maintained, whether any design flaws existed, or whether the pilot had received sufficient training for the flight conditions. If another party, such as a maintenance provider or equipment manufacturer, played a role in the tragedy, a wrongful death or third-party liability claim may be appropriate.
