Two construction workers were seriously injured Thursday, April 24, 2025 at the site of an $11 billion Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center campus near New Carlisle, Indiana. Emergency crews responded to reports of a fire and injured workers just before noon and quickly began rescue operations.
The New Carlisle Fire Department was dispatched to the scene around 11:30 a.m. after reports of smoke filling one of the buildings—identified as Building 104—on the expansive construction site. As firefighters arrived, they encountered a large volume of smoke and an active evacuation of workers from the area. Two workers were treated by medics on-site for what were described as severe injuries and were then airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital. Officials have not yet released further information on the identities or current condition of the injured workers.
The Dangers of Large-Scale Construction Sites
Large commercial construction projects, especially those involving high-tech infrastructure like data centers, are inherently complex and present a wide range of safety challenges. The presence of electrical systems, HVAC installations, fuel tanks, temporary power sources, and heavy machinery makes the risk of construction accidents significantly higher compared to routine construction work.
Smoke and fire hazards remain one of the leading concerns, particularly when work is being performed in confined areas or when inspections involve sensitive systems such as generators or cooling equipment. Even small fires or mechanical malfunctions can cause life-threatening injuries, either through direct burns, electrical shock, or the inhalation of toxic fumes.
In addition to fire risks, construction sites often have uneven terrain, partially completed structures, unsecured equipment, and constant vehicle traffic, all of which contribute to the likelihood of injury. That’s why regular safety audits, proper protective gear, and rigorous training are essential—not optional.
This incident should serve as a reminder of the need for strict adherence to safety standards and clear coordination between subcontractors, engineers, and site supervisors. Any breakdown in safety protocols can lead to devastating consequences for workers and their families.
Legal Options for Injured Workers
When a serious construction injury occurs, it’s not always clear who bears responsibility. In many cases, the injured party may be entitled to pursue a personal injury claim not just through workers’ compensation, but also against third-party entities—such as equipment manufacturers, subcontractors, or property owners—whose negligence contributed to the incident.
Victims may be entitled to damages for:
- Emergency medical care and ongoing treatment
- Lost income and future earning potential
- Pain and suffering
- Disability and long-term rehabilitation costs
