Grandfather and Grandson Killed in Small Plane Crash in Chambers County, Texas

by | May 26, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

A tragic aviation accident claimed the lives of a grandfather and his grandson over the weekend in a remote area of Chambers County, Texas. The victims were identified as Larry Motte of La Porte and his minor grandson. Authorities confirmed that the two were aboard a red and white Rockwell Commander 114A when it crashed late Saturday afternoon, May 24, 2025.

The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible downed aircraft at approximately 10:35 p.m. near FM 1724, just south of Interstate 10 in Hankamer. The aircraft’s final ADS-B data transmission at 4:57 p.m. indicated a sudden and steep loss of altitude.

A coordinated overnight search was launched by multiple agencies, including the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Game Wardens, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the United States Coast Guard. The wreckage was located the next morning in a heavily wooded area. Both occupants were found deceased at the scene. The crash is now under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Potential Causes and Contributing Factors

Preliminary data shows the aircraft departed Baytown Airport (HPY) at approximately 4:28 p.m. and was observed circling near Anahuac, Texas. Around 4:56 p.m., the plane briefly climbed before entering a rapid, steep descent.  This kind of descent pattern could suggest a variety of contributing factors, such as:

The investigation will focus on wreckage examination, pilot experience, aircraft maintenance history, and weather conditions at the time of the crash. Investigators will also analyze engine data and airframe integrity to determine whether a mechanical failure may have occurred.

Risks and Safety Considerations

Single-engine general aviation aircraft like the Rockwell Commander 114A are commonly used for personal and recreational flights. However, they require strict adherence to maintenance schedules, operational limitations, and real-time weather assessments. Accidents involving rapid descent and loss of control often result in fatalities due to the limited time and altitude available for recovery.

This incident underscores the ongoing risks associated with general aviation. Even experienced pilots can face sudden emergencies that leave little margin for error.

Legal Rights and Options

When a fatal aviation accident occurs, surviving family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. If the investigation reveals that mechanical failure, manufacturing defects, or maintenance errors played a role, additional claims may be filed against third parties.

Possible liable parties may include:

  • The manufacturer of the aircraft or its components
  • A maintenance facility or technician responsible for recent inspections or repairs
  • The aircraft owner or operator, if safety protocols were overlooked
  • Third-party service providers involved in fueling, navigation, or aircraft operation

An aviation accident attorney can help the family understand their rights, preserve evidence, and work with expert investigators to determine fault. Legal claims may cover loss of companionship, funeral costs, and other compensable damages related to the deaths of both victims.
