A boating accident on Lake of the Ozarks left one man hospitalized on Friday, June 28, 2025, after a cabin cruiser exploded while docked. The incident occurred in Standing Rock Hollow near the 33 Mile Marker and is under investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
What Happened at Lake of the Ozarks
According to official reports, the explosion happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. aboard a 1986 Wellcraft cabin cruiser. The vessel was docked at the time, and the explosion occurred immediately after the boat’s motor was started. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has not yet confirmed whether the boat had recently been refueled, but fumes from fuel vapors are a known cause of such explosions—especially on older boats.
The driver of the boat, a 70-year-old man from St. Joseph, Missouri, was not injured. However, a 35-year-old passenger, sustained injuries and was transported to Lake Regional Hospital for treatment. The vessel was destroyed in the explosion, eventually burning and sinking at the dock.
Potential Causes and Safety Risks of Boat Explosions
Boat explosions are often preventable, especially when linked to fuel vapor buildup in enclosed compartments. Possible contributing factors in this incident could include:
- Failure to ventilate engine compartments before starting the motor
- Leaking fuel lines or loose fittings
- Improper refueling procedures or residual vapors
- Electrical sparks from the starter motor or battery connections
Older vessels may be more susceptible to these hazards due to age-related wear and outdated safety features. Dockside explosions can also place nearby vessels and individuals at risk, even if the boat is stationary.
Legal Rights Following a Boat Explosion
When someone is injured in a boating explosion, it is critical to investigate the cause and determine whether negligence played a role. Injured passengers may have legal claims against the boat owner, marina, maintenance provider, or equipment manufacturers, depending on the circumstances.
Potential legal issues may include:
- Failure to maintain the vessel in a safe condition
- Negligent fueling or handling of flammable materials
- Defective parts or design flaws in the boat’s fuel or electrical systems
- Lack of safety inspections or warnings at marinas
Injured parties may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other damages.
