Cargo Ship Fire Aboard Morning Midas Forces Crew Evacuation

by | Jun 5, 2025 | Maritime Law

A major maritime accident in the North Pacific has drawn attention to the growing risks involved in transporting electric vehicles by sea. On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, a vehicle carrier named Morning Midas, loaded with approximately 3,000 cars—including 800 electric vehicles (EVs)—was abandoned after a fire broke out roughly 300 miles south of Adak Island, Alaska.

Crew Evacuated as Fire Spreads on EV Deck

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, smoke was first seen coming from the deck of the ship that carried electric vehicles. Despite the crew’s efforts to extinguish the blaze using the ship’s fire suppression systems, the fire quickly grew out of control. All 22 crew members were ultimately evacuated and transferred to a nearby merchant vessel.

The Morning Midas, a 600-foot cargo ship managed by Zodiac Maritime, was en route from Yantai, China, to Mexico when the fire erupted. The ship was also carrying approximately 2,200 gasoline-powered vehicles and is believed to have had hundreds of tons of fuel on board, further complicating emergency response efforts.

EV Fires Raise Maritime Safety and Liability Concerns

This latest cargo ship fire underscores the legal and safety challenges tied to transporting high-risk cargo such as electric vehicles. Lithium-ion battery fires are notoriously difficult to contain, with the potential for thermal runaway—a condition where the fire escalates through chemical reactions and becomes nearly impossible to stop without specialized equipment and massive quantities of water.

Such fires are particularly hazardous aboard enclosed, steel-lined vehicle decks where ventilation is poor and access is restricted. In these situations, the risk to human life, environmental damage, and property loss is significant.

Maritime Accident Attorneys Monitoring Legal Implications

Fires aboard commercial vessels raise serious questions about the seaworthiness of the ship, the training and preparedness of the crew, and whether all proper safety protocols were followed in loading, storing, and securing hazardous cargo. Shipowners, charter companies, and cargo handlers may all bear legal responsibility if it is found that negligence played a role in the outbreak or escalation of the fire.
