Helicopter Crash Near Deadhorse, Alaska Claims Two Lives

by | Jun 5, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

A tragic helicopter accident occurred on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in Alaska’s remote North Slope region, claiming the lives of both individuals on board. The crash involved a Robinson R66 helicopter operating approximately 30 miles west of Deadhorse, near the Kuparuk oil field. The aircraft was reportedly supporting scientific fieldwork based out of Prudhoe Bay at the time of the incident.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that it was alerted to the missing helicopter Wednesday afternoon. Debris from the crash was located shortly thereafter. The helicopter was operated by Pollux Aviation, a Wasilla-based company that frequently supports research and industrial projects in Alaska’s Arctic regions. Reports indicate the aircraft was engaged in a scientific field support mission, though the name of the client has not been disclosed. The NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have both launched investigations into the cause of the accident. Weather reports from the National Weather Service indicated overcast skies but good visibility at the time of the crash, with subfreezing temperatures.  The two victims have been identified as Shiloh Schulte and Jonathan Guibas.

Common Risks in Remote Helicopter Operations

Helicopter operations in remote and Arctic regions present unique challenges. Sudden weather changes, mechanical strain from cold temperatures, and communication limitations often contribute to elevated accident risks. The Robinson R66, while popular for its range and performance, has been involved in previous high-profile crashes, prompting scrutiny regarding its operation in harsh environments.

Victims in these types of accidents are frequently supporting oil, gas, scientific, or logistics operations in isolated regions—sometimes without adequate emergency planning or safety oversight.

Legal Rights for Victims and Their Families

When fatal helicopter accidents occur during work-related or contracted missions, families may have the right to pursue compensation.

Operators, charter companies, and third-party contractors have legal obligations to ensure aircraft are maintained to safety standards, pilots are properly trained, and all flight activities are conducted with due regard for risk. In cases where these standards are breached—whether due to equipment failure, operational negligence, or inadequate oversight—liability may rest with the operator, service providers, or contracting companies.

Even in remote areas like the Arctic, families should not assume that remoteness exempts companies from accountability.
