Two Killed in Fiery Plane Crash at Boat Dealership in Harnett County, North Carolina

by | Jun 22, 2025 | Aviation Accident, Wrongful Death

A tragic aviation accident occurred the morning of Friday, June 20, 2025, in Harnett County, North Carolina, resulting in the deaths of two men. The small aircraft, identified as an Aviat Pitts S-2B, crashed into a boat dealership near Holly Springs Church Road in the Broadway area, just minutes after takeoff from Raleigh Executive Jetport in Sanford.

Crash Details

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane went down at approximately 9:35 a.m., just five minutes after taking off. The crash site was located near NC Wake Boats, a dealership situated about a quarter-mile from Highway 421.

Witnesses described the plane clipping over a building before crashing and igniting a large fire, which rapidly spread jet fuel across the site. Emergency responders confirmed that both the pilot and the passenger were severely burned and pronounced dead at the scene.

The victims have been identified as Anton Vandeth (pilot) and Dwight Frye (passenger). Both men were reported to be experienced aviators, and the aircraft was believed to be conducting a training exercise at the time of the crash.

Aircraft and Flight Information

The aircraft involved was an Aviat Pitts S-2B, a high-performance, aerobatic biplane commonly used for advanced flight training and aerobatics. Reports indicate that the doomed flight lasted only seven minutes from takeoff to impact. This model of aircraft, while well-regarded for maneuverability, demands high proficiency and precision from pilots due to its sensitivity and speed.

Ongoing Investigations

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and FAA are leading the investigation to determine what caused the crash. Early statements from a witness suggest that a mechanical or engine failure may have played a role, as a “clip over the building” and rapid descent were observed. The aircraft will be relocated to a secure facility for further analysis by federal investigators.

Legal Considerations in Small Plane Crashes

When a fatal aircraft accident occurs, a thorough investigation into maintenance records, pilot training, aircraft design, and flight operations is critical. Victims’ families may be entitled to pursue legal claims if evidence suggests:

  • Mechanical failure due to poor aircraft maintenance or defective parts
  • Negligence in aircraft inspection or flight preparation
  • Inadequate pilot training or operational procedures
  • Air traffic control errors or miscommunications

In crashes involving privately owned or training aircraft, potential defendants may include aircraft owners, maintenance providers, flight schools, or aircraft manufacturers, depending on the findings of the NTSB investigation.
