A devastating boating accident on Bayou Sara in Saraland, Alabama, has left one woman dead and two of her family members injured. The incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2025, when two vessels collided on the waterway. Multiple agencies responded to the emergency, and an investigation is ongoing.
Incident Summary
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), 27-year-old Brittney Sherman of Wilmer was ejected from a boat and later found deceased after her vessel collided with another boat. Brittney was a passenger in the boat, which was operated by a 19-year-old man from Lucedale.
Her husband, 30-year-old Cody Sherman, and their 4-year-old child were also passengers. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. Fortunately, the operators of both boats—the 19-year-old and a 52-year-old Wilmer man piloting the second vessel—were not injured. Emergency crews recovered Brittney Sherman’s body the following day, June 16, around 11 a.m., approximately 100 yards from where she had entered the water.
Ongoing Investigation
Several agencies—including the Mobile Police Department, ALEA Marine Patrol, Daphne Search and Rescue, and others—participated in the search and recovery effort. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is now leading the investigation into the cause of the crash.
As of now, it is unclear what caused the two boats to collide. Authorities will be examining:
- Whether either boat was traveling at excessive speed
- Whether operators were following navigational rules
- The condition and operability of both vessels
- Possible visibility or environmental factors
- Whether alcohol or distractions were involved
Legal Responsibilities After a Boating Accident
Boat operators are required to follow both state and federal boating regulations, including rules concerning safe speeds, lookouts, and maintaining control of the vessel. When a collision occurs, the operator may be held liable if they failed to operate the vessel in a reasonably safe manner.
In this case, questions remain as to whether either operator acted negligently or failed to yield, maintain proper lookout, or adhere to safety standards. Victims and their families may be entitled to compensation if negligence played a role in the crash.
